Curious Homes Looking for home accessories to turn your house into a home that tells a story?

How to decorate your meditation room (or corner!)

Whether you have a small flat or a large home you can create your own meditation space. As the environment around you will affect your meditations, everything in the room – colours, decorations, items – should help you relax. There are some general rules which I will explain below but decorating a meditation room is very personal and you should only surround yourself with items that make YOU relax.

Cut off the outside world
If you are lucky enough to be able to choose a room which you will transform into your peaceful haven, this should generally be the quietest room in the house, preferably away from the other main daily activities and a place that can give you complete privacy.
If you only have a small space to play with, you can still achieve this by keeping any source of distraction (computers, phones and TVs) away. If your space will be used for other tasks too (like in my case – I have an office/spare bedroom/meditation room) you will also have to pay particular attention to the layout. Sliding or folding screens are good to create your corner temporarily for a tiny space.

Say no to clutter
Keep it simple. If you have a serene atmosphere, your meditation sessions will be more effective.

Colours, relaxing pictures, candles, incense and music
The home accessories that you decide to have in your meditation space should be quiet and not overwhelming to the eye. Choose colours that help you feel relaxed, such as pastel colours.
Many people feel that having aromatherapy candles, incense, table top fountains, flowers, rhythmic music, natural sounds, chants and hymns, holy books and photos of dear ones help them to relax better.
The pictures that you pick will need to have a calming effect. Find pictures to inspire you as you put together your new look – oceans, rivers, gardens, lakes and sunsets are a good option if you are stuck for ideas.

Seating
The more comfortable you are throughout meditation, the more tranquil and deeper state you will achieve. There are a few options to choose from: mats, benches, chairs or cushions. The best approach is to find the position that is most comfortable for you personally.
