Have you just moved into your new place? Have you decided your home needs a makeover but don’t know where to begin? Here’s some useful tips to get you started, which briefly summarise the idea behind CuriousHomes.
Personalise it with the things that you love
Have you ever been to someone’s home and felt that you could not really learn anything new about this person, just by paying attention to the way they decorated their home? It is pretty much the sort of feeling we probably all get when we find neutral colours and meaningless decor when viewing a house to rent or buy. Whilst we can all understand why landlords or sellers do this in order for the house to appeal to as many people as possible, surely we wouldn’t want our friends and family to think the same when visiting our home? When it comes to planning your new home decor, adding your personal touch is essential. A perfect example to explain this is walls decor – an almost inexpensive framed picture taken on a special holiday would definitely say a lot more about you and your family, than a picture bought from Ikea (and that thousands of other families in the UK own!). Only by making your decor a reflection of who you are, can you transform your home into a unique and special place.
Home accessories are the key
As soon as the house is purchased or the decision to redecorate has been made, most people go and buy new furniture to fill all the rooms in the home. This may put quite a stress on our wallets and this is when home accessories become the key to giving your little empire a makeover without breaking the bank. Sitting room? There is no need for a new sofa when you can buy luxurious, colourful throws and cushions whilst still achieving the same wow effect. Now think of your bedroom. How about cosy bedding and bedside lamps instead of a brand new bed? By saying all this I am obviously not trying to imply that you should never buy new furniture. However, if you really want to decorate on a budget you should really try and consider what you really need and what you ultimately want to achieve. A few small changes here and there can totally change the look of your house.
Don’t be afraid to mix and match
Choosing your own style doesn’t mean that all rooms in your home should look the same. It also doesn’t mean that you can’t make unusual pieces coming from a mainstream high street shop, a car boot sale and an antique fair all work together. There is nothing wrong with an eclectic look. Don’t be afraid to try new things. Remember – there are no rules. You can’t really go wrong if your home decor makes you feel happy and relaxed.
Don’t compromise on practicality
I can’t stress enough just how much planning your home decor will always help you save time and money. Planning what to buy will also help you avoid decisions that you’ll regret later. When decorating your home, you should always keep practicality in mind. What is the point in buying a lovely shining chandelier if you’re so busy that you’re not going to have the chance to clean it in the next 2 years? Ok, this is a very extreme example but these things do happen. Let’s take the curtains: better if they are machine washable. Bedside tables: some might look pretty but have they got enough storage space for all your books and other bits and bobs? New home office chair: is it really as comfortable as it looks? Do not forget common sense before opening your wallet.
